Eight 480 W LONGi panels, a 3.68 kW inverter and an EcoFlow PowerOcean battery with two 5 kWh modules. With an inverter this size, we only had to notify the network operator after the install, so it went ahead soon after the survey unconfirmed.

Derby homes and what we check first

Derby has a bit of everything, from Victorian terraces to new estates. These are the things we look at on a survey here unconfirmed.

Terraced streets

In areas like Normanton, Pear Tree and the West End, roofs are often smaller and split by chimneys and back extensions, with little side access. We plan the panels around the roof you have, and arrange the scaffold, including a council licence if it has to stand on the pavement.

1930s and post-war semis

Many homes in Allestree, Littleover and Chaddesden have hipped roofs, which leave less room on each slope. We often spread the panels over two slopes, or suggest in-roof panels where the roof is being redone anyway.

Newer estates

Some newer homes in Mickleover, Hilton and Chellaston came with a small solar system from the builder. Adding a battery or more panels can make more of it, so we check what's already there first.

Conservation areas and listed buildings

Parts of Derby, including Friar Gate and Darley Abbey, are conservation areas, and Darley Abbey is part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Most home solar doesn't need planning permission, but a listed building does, and some conservation areas have extra rules. We check before we design, and help with the application if one is needed.

The grid connection

Derby's local electricity network is run by National Grid Electricity Distribution (formerly Western Power Distribution). Systems with an inverter up to 3.68 kW only need us to notify them after installation (G98). Bigger systems, or a battery that takes the total higher, need their approval before we install (G99). We make both applications for you.

Older wiring

Before adding a battery or an EV charger to an older home, we check the fuse box (consumer unit) and earthing. If an upgrade is needed, it's in your quote from the start.

What Derby customers say

"After 8 months of working with a large national energy company, who walked away on the installation day, a friend recommended Mercia Electrical to install a Solar/battery solution. … Mercia quickly migrated the existing paperwork/permits to their control, thereby avoiding further delays. … A great team to work with, you'll be in safe hands."

Questions from Derby homeowners

How much do solar panels cost in Derby?

Solar panels in Derby cost the same as across the rest of our area unconfirmed. Our home systems start from about £5,000 without a battery and about £7,000 with one unconfirmed. See our solar panel prices by system size. For a quick figure for your own roof, the online designer gives you a price in a few minutes unconfirmed.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Derby?

Usually not. Most roof-mounted panels on houses are allowed without an application. You'll need permission for a listed building, and some conservation areas have extra rules. We check this for your address before we design anything, and help with the application if one is needed.

Do you deal with the network operator for me?

Yes. We notify National Grid Electricity Distribution after installation for smaller systems, or apply for approval beforehand for larger ones, and we handle the paperwork either way.

Can you fit solar panels on a terraced house?

Often, yes. The number of panels depends on how much clear roof there is once chimneys, windows and back extensions are allowed for. We'll show you the layout before you decide.

Which parts of Derby do you cover?

All of it, from Mickleover and Littleover to Chaddesden, Spondon and Chellaston, and the villages around the city unconfirmed. If you're unsure, put your postcode in the form above.

Can I add a battery to the solar panels I already have?

In most cases, yes unconfirmed. We check your existing inverter and wiring at the survey and tell you which batteries will work with them.
