Trevor Little, Derby: in-roof panels and a Tesla Powerwall 3

After a national company walked away on installation day, Trevor came to us on a friend's recommendation. We took over the existing paperwork and permits, worked alongside his roofer and fitted a 16-panel GSE in-roof system with a Tesla Powerwall 3.

"Mercia quickly migrated the existing paperwork/permits to their control, thereby avoiding further delays… A great team to work with, you'll be in safe hands."

Dave Samworth, Grantham: solar and a battery after an EV charger

Dave first had us fit a Project EV charger, then came back for solar.

"Do it. You won't regret it. Yes, there's an initial outlay — but once it's installed, you don't think about that."

Solar panels for your home: what you get

A solar panel installation turns daylight into electricity for your home. You use the power as it's made, store what's spare in a battery if you have one, and get paid for what you send to the grid through the Smart Export Guarantee.

We design every system around three things:

  • Your roof: how much space there is, which way it faces, its pitch and any shading.
  • Your usage: how much electricity you use, and when.
  • Your budget: what you want to spend now, and whether you might add a battery or an EV charger later.

Then we handle the rest: the survey, scaffolding, installation, the grid (DNO) paperwork and your MCS certificate.

Panels work from daylight, not just direct sun, so they generate all year, most from spring to early autumn. In the Midlands, each kilowatt of panels produces roughly 850 kWh a year unconfirmed, so a typical 4 kW system makes around 3,400 kWh unconfirmed.

How much does solar panel installation cost?

Our home systems start from about £5,000 without a battery and about £7,000 with one unconfirmed. The right size depends on your roof and your usage; the online designer gives you an instant quote for your own home.

7 kW14–16about 5,950 kWh£6,360£8,100

Generation figures are estimates based on about 850 kWh per kW of panels a year in the Midlands; your roof's direction, pitch and shading change them.

Every price includes the panels, inverter, mounting, scaffolding, installation, MCS certification and the grid (DNO) paperwork.

0% VAT. Solar panels and batteries fitted to homes are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027 unconfirmed.

Spread the cost. Finance is available through our finance partners, Hometree and Phoenix. Finance is subject to status.

Price match promise. Find a cheaper like-for-like quote from another MCS certified installer and we'll match it and take a further £100 off unconfirmed. Terms apply.

Choosing the right solar panels for your home

icon

On-roof panels

The most common choice: panels fixed on rails above your existing tiles. They suit most pitched roofs.

icon

In-roof panels

The panels replace a section of tiles and sit flush with the roof, using the GSE in-roof system. A neat option if you're having a new roof or re-roofing, as Trevor Little did in Derby.

icon

Flat roofs

Angled frames hold the panels at a good pitch for generation. We check the roof can take the weight before we design anything.

icon

Ground-mount

Panels on a frame in your garden or a field, away from the house. Useful when the roof is small, shaded or on a listed building.

The panels and inverters we fit

All-black monocrystalline panels from tier 1 makers such as LONGi and JA Solar, with string, hybrid or micro-inverters from Fox ESS, SolaX, Solis, Sungrow, SolarEdge and Enphase. Micro-inverters suit roofs with chimneys or partial shade; a hybrid inverter makes adding a battery later simple.

Add to your system

  • Battery storage: keep spare solar power for the evening. See solar battery storage.
  • EV charger: charge your car from your own panels. See home EV charger installation.
  • Solar iBoost: heat your hot water with spare solar power.
  • Bird protection: mesh that stops birds nesting under the panels.

How solar panel installation works

  1. Design and price.

Use the online designer or call us. We look at your roof and your usage and send you a proposal with the system size and price.

  2. Survey.

A surveyor visits to check the roof, your electrics and where the inverter and any battery will go, then confirms the design.

  3. Paperwork.

We notify or apply to your network operator (the DNO) and check whether you need planning permission. Most homes don't.

  4. Installation.

Scaffolding goes up, then our team fits the panels, inverter and any battery. Most homes take one to two days on site unconfirmed.

  5. Handover.

We commission the system, set up your monitoring app, register it with MCS and send your certificates, so you can apply for export payments.

How long it takes.

From survey to installation usually takes three to four weeks unconfirmed. Systems with an inverter up to 3.68 kW unconfirmed can go in straight after the survey, with the DNO told afterwards (a G98 connection). Larger systems need the DNO's approval first (G99), which can add a few weeks.

Solar panel questions

Are solar panels worth it in the Midlands?

It depends on your roof, your usage and your tariff, which is why we design each system rather than sell a fixed package. Panels generate from daylight all year. Your proposal shows estimated generation for your own roof, and Trevor in Derby saved £1,560 in his first full year unconfirmed until the video is approved.

Do I need planning permission?

Most homes don't: panels on a house roof are usually permitted development. You may need permission for a listed building, in some conservation areas, or for a larger ground-mounted array unconfirmed. We check during the survey and help with the application if you need one.

How long do solar panels last, and what upkeep do they need?

[Answer to come from Carly: the panel and inverter warranties Mercia offers, how long the panels are expected to last, and the upkeep Mercia recommends (cleaning, checks, any servicing).] unconfirmed

Can I add a battery later?

Yes. If you think you'll want one, we fit a hybrid inverter now so a battery can be added later without rewiring. If you already have panels, we can usually add a battery alongside your existing inverter unconfirmed. Our solar battery storage page explains the options.

How do I get paid for the electricity I export?

Through the Smart Export Guarantee. Energy suppliers pay you for each unit you send to the grid, at a rate they set, and you choose the supplier. You need an MCS certificate to apply, which we send after installation with your other documents.

Is there a government grant for solar panels?

Not for most homeowners. There's no general government grant for solar panels, but panels and batteries on homes have 0% VAT until 31 March 2027 unconfirmed. Some households on lower incomes can get help through their council, for example the Warm Homes: Local Grant in England unconfirmed. Check with your council whether you qualify.
