What a home EV charger installation involves
A home EV charger is a wall-mounted charge point on its own circuit, usually on an outside wall next to where you park. A typical 7 kW charger adds roughly 25 to 30 miles of range an hour unconfirmed, about three times faster than a three-pin plug, and it's built for hours of continuous charging, which a household socket isn't.
Every charger we fit is a smart charger unconfirmed. It connects to an app, lets you schedule charging for cheaper overnight rates and can respond to the grid at busy times, as the law requires for new home chargers unconfirmed.
A standard installation includes unconfirmed: what's in a standard install:
- the charger, fixed to your wall
- a new circuit from your consumer unit, with the protection the wiring regulations require
- the cable run between your consumer unit and the charger, up to a set length
- earth fault protection (built into most smart chargers, so most homes don't need an earth rod)
- telling your network operator (DNO) about the charger
- testing, set-up in the app and a walk-through
- your electrical installation certificate
The home EV chargers we fit
We fit smart chargers from Ohme, Project EV and Tesla. They work with any electric car that has a Type 2 socket, which is almost every EV sold in the UK. We'll recommend one based on your car, your tariff, whether you have solar, and whether you want a fixed cable.
Ohme
A smart charger that works with many EV tariffs to charge at the cheapest times.
Project EV
We've fitted Project EV chargers in homes and at workplaces, including the Apex model on a home with solar and a battery unconfirmed.
Tesla Wall Connector
A tethered charger with a long cable, for Tesla drivers and other EVs.
Tethered or untethered?
A tethered charger has its cable fixed on, so you just plug in. An untethered one has a socket, and you use your car's own cable: it looks tidier and suits households that might change car. Both charge at the same speed.
How much does home EV charger installation cost?
Most home installations cost from £[from price] unconfirmed: "from" price from Carly. The final price depends on the charger you choose and on your home:
- how far the charger is from your consumer unit, and whether the cable goes through walls or under a drive
- whether your consumer unit has space, or needs upgrading first
- whether the charger needs a tethered cable, a longer cable or a post rather than a wall
We give you a fixed written quote before any work starts, based on photos of your consumer unit, your meter and where you park, so the price you agree is the price you pay.
Grants. The government's EV chargepoint grant is for people who rent or who own a flat with off-street parking, not for homeowners in houses unconfirmed. If you're eligible, we'll tell you how it works when we quote unconfirmed: is Mercia an OZEV authorised installer?.
How EV charger installation works
Get in touch.
Fill in the form below or call us. Tell us your car, where you park and roughly where you'd like the charger.
Send a few photos.
We'll ask for photos of your consumer unit, your electricity meter and the spot for the charger. Most homes can be assessed from these, without a visit.
Fixed quote.
A clear written quote for the charger, the installation and anything extra your home needs.
Installation day.
Our electricians fit and test the charger, usually in half a day unconfirmed, and tell your network operator about it.
Handover and follow-up.
We set up the app with you, show you how to schedule charging, and check in afterwards to make sure everything is working.
Charge your car from your own solar panels
If you have solar panels, or are thinking about them, your car can become the biggest user of the power you make. We set up the charger to use spare solar during the day, and a battery or a cheap overnight rate for the rest.
In Burton-on-Trent, we fitted eight solar panels, a Fox ESS battery and an EV charger on one home: the system powers both the house and the car unconfirmed until the video is approved.
Design my solar systemEV chargers from a Derby team
Mercia started out fitting EV chargers in 2020 unconfirmed, from our base in Mickleover, Derby. We've since fitted over 800 chargers for homes and businesses unconfirmed, and we fit home chargers across Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and the West Midlands unconfirmed: Midlands only, or further?.
"we had a EV point installed by Mercia Electrical, fantastic service from Carly and the installers. Would definitely recommend."
Dave Samworth in Grantham first had us fit a Project EV charger, then came back to us for solar panels and a battery unconfirmed.

Home EV charger questions
Do I need off-street parking?
Yes. For a home charger you need a driveway or garage where the cable can reach the car without crossing a public pavement. If you park on the street, ask your council about public charge points near you or cross-pavement cable channels.
Can I install an EV charger myself?
No. A home EV charger needs a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit, which is notifiable electrical work unconfirmed: Part P, re-check at launch, so a registered electrician, such as our NICEIC approved team, has to install, test and certify it. You get the electrical installation certificate at handover. Any government grant also has to be claimed through an approved installer unconfirmed.
How long does installation take?
Most home chargers are fitted in half a day unconfirmed. If the cable has a long way to run, has to go under a drive, or your consumer unit needs upgrading first, it can take longer. We'll tell you in the quote, and agree a date that suits you.
Will I need a new consumer unit or a bigger supply?
Sometimes. The charger needs its own circuit and the right protection, so an older or full consumer unit may need upgrading, which we price in the quote. If your main fuse is small, your network operator may need to upgrade it; we arrange that with them unconfirmed.
Is there a grant for a home EV charger?
Only for some people. The government's EV chargepoint grant covers people who rent or who own a flat, not homeowners in houses unconfirmed. Some energy suppliers and car makers run their own offers. We'll tell you what applies to you when we quote.
Can my charger use power from my solar panels?
Yes, if it has a solar mode. Many smart chargers can top up the car with spare solar during the day and switch to a cheap overnight rate when they need to. Tell us about your solar system and battery, and we'll recommend a charger that works with them.
What size charger do I need?
For most homes, a 7 kW charger unconfirmed, which is the most a standard single-phase home supply can run. Faster 22 kW chargers need a three-phase supply, which few houses have, and most cars charge at no more than 11 kW on AC anyway unconfirmed.
